As educators in Seattle lead the city’s first teacher strike in 30 years, we share this interview with Rethinking Schools associate editor and history teacher Jesse Hagopian and Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant. Hagopian explains:
The educators of Seattle are teaching a great lesson, not only to our students, but to the entire city of Seattle, a lesson in solidarity, a lesson in the power of collective struggle. And we’re transforming this city. It’s electric on the picket lines, with families coming and delivering food. And it’s really galvanized the community to the side of the teachers, because they know we’re standing up for the issues that matter most to our families.
