Thanks to a donation from REI Co-op and individual donors to the Zinn Education Project, we can offer 2,000 copies of The Sum of Us: How Racism Hurts Everyone (young readers’ edition) to teachers, teacher educators, school librarians, and curriculum specialists. The requests can be for 1, 5, 12, or 24 copies — depending on how the book will be used. There are a limited number of the sets of 12 and 24. Everyone requesting a copy of the book will be asked to describe how they will use them.
To request the books, respond to these questions on this form.
- Offer a description of how you will use these books in your curriculum. The more copies you request, the longer the response you are asked to give!
- To help spread the word about the book, we ask recipients to plan to give it visibility. Tell how you might do that. It could be asking students to write reviews for Goodreads or other book platforms, student-created social media promotions for the book, a story from you about student responses to the book, a photo of your class with the book on social media, or other ideas you have.
With regrets, this offer is no longer available. All the books have been claimed.
The good news is that students all over the United States will be reading The Sum of Us.
I am currently reading this on my own, and it was so timely because a few weeks ago we had been discussing unions, and this book offered a perfect supplement in a modern context. Incredibly insightful and helpful resource!
I was inspired during yesterday’s presentation to dig deeper. Students in my middle school classes are well aware of the racism they face in our school, in our communities, and in our country. What I am interested in offering is an opportunity to help students articulate their experience. I hope that The Sum of Us will help make that happen.
