It is time to stop celebrating the crimes of Columbus and stand in solidarity with the Indigenous people who demand an end to Columbus Day. No more glorifying a person who enslaved and murdered people, destroyed cultures, and terrorized those who resisted his rule. Instead, let’s honor these communities demanding sovereignty, recognition, and civil rights. We encourage teachers to “abolish Columbus Day” in your classrooms, by teaching the truth about Columbus and the people who were here first. We encourage schools to petition their administrations and school boards to substitute Indigenous Peoples’ Day for Columbus Day. And we encourage communities to introduce legislation to rename Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Stay tuned—more to come this fall. Donate now to help launch this campaign.
