The Zinn Education Project (ZEP) had a lively two days of discussions and community building during the 2016 National Council for the Social Studies annual conference. Held in Washington, D.C., Dec. 2-3, the ZEP booth was a haven for teachers to talk about the challenges of teaching in these times, browse people’s history books, meet ZEP staff and volunteers, and get books signed by authors Laurie Halse Anderson, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, Dina Gilio-Whitaker, Judy Richardson, and Betty Garman Robinson.
At the booth we conducted surveys on teaching about Reconstruction, teaching about the elections, and how teacher educators introduce the Zinn Education Project to their students. In appreciation for completing the survey, respondents received a raffle ticket for a chance to win a deluxe edition of A Peoples History of the United States or Midnight in Broad Daylight. Both books were donated by HarperCollins.
NCSS was the first opportunity for people to get the new ZEP t-shirts. Friday evening we hosted a sold-out People’s History Trivia Night at Busboys and Poets, a fundraising event for the Zinn Education Project.
Next year the NCSS conference will be in San Francisco, Nov. 17-19, 2017.
