This week, the Zinn Education Project reached a milestone: 10,000 new registered teachers in 2014. We now have more than 44,500 teachers using our materials, teaching outside the textbook.

In November, we exposed how the Koch brothers funnel millions of dollars every year to shape the social studies curriculum in schools across the country. The Koch brothers’ version of the world is that only Great Men have ideas that matter, and the most important freedom is the right to manage one’s private property without regulation.
We don’t have the Koch brothers’ money. But with your help we can continue our work to offer teachers curriculum materials in the tradition of Howard Zinn—materials that show how ordinary people can make a difference in the world.
This year, in addition to registering 10,000 new teachers and exposing the Koch brothers, we also:
- Added 12 new lessons on labor history and launched a collection of lessons in Spanish
- Connected Civil Rights Movement veterans with high school students to share their experiences through virtual “visits”
- Partnered with Naomi Klein to convene teachers to write curriculum for her new book, This Changes Everything, on capitalism vs. the climate
- Expanded our Facebook network with 80,000 new fans learning the history they were never taught in school
- and MUCH more.
We have big plans for 2015 to:
- Increase the number of teaching materials on the website, including more Spanish translations of resources
- Continue to monitor and expose the Koch brothers’ infiltration into the K-12 curriculum
- Deepen our collaboration with the This Changes Everything project and with the educators who are teaching honestly and imaginatively about the climate crisis
- Identify teachers to participate in “training of trainers” workshops to deepen our engagement with educators
- Expand our presence at Teaching for Social Justice conferences in key cities, and
- Be a major presence at next year’s National Council for the Social Studies conference in New Orleans, where we will offer teaching materials to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Katrina.
