Hatuey: 500th Anniversary of a Freedom Fighter

Everyone knows the name of Christopher Columbus, but how many of us can name a single Taíno – the people who encountered Columbus on the island of Hispaniola, where he set up his base? Hatuey was a Taíno cacique who led a resistance movement of Taínos and Africans against the Spanish occupation. He was executed 500 years ago.
