Music, special guest presentations, and a reading of People Speak Live! (with selections from Howard Zinn’s Voices of a People’s History.) Full restaurant event. Free and open to the public. A raffle will be held for books, CDs, and DVDs by Howard Zinn and related people’s history titles. Raffle tickets are $5 each. Selection of prizes listed below.

6-8 p.m. Reception, Music, and Featured Presentations

Music, refreshments, and presentations by Jeff Zinn, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Amy Goodman, Dave Zirin, Marian Wright Edelman, and more. Reception with appetizers, beer, wine, and soft drinks. Gift bags. In the Howard Zinn Room. Donation* of $100 per ticket to support the Zinn Education Project – use ticket purchase button below. All donations to this event will be matched by an anonymous donor.


Location and Coordinators

Busboys and Poets has four locations in the DC metro area with a restaurant, bar, performance space, and independent bookstore or fair trade store. Busboys and Poets is a space for art, culture and politics to intentionally collide with the belief that “by creating such a space we can inspire social change and begin to transform our community and the world.”

The Zinn Education Project promotes and supports the use of Howard Zinn’s best-selling book A People’s History of the United States and other materials for teaching a people’s history in middle and high school classrooms across the country. The website offers more than 95 free, downloadable lessons and articles organized by theme, time period, and reading level. Over 13,000 teachers from every state use the materials to teach outside the textbook.

Voices of a People’s History, founded in 2007 by Howard Zinn and an acclaimed group of artists, educators, and activists, helps to produce People Speak Live! performances in school and community settings. The online and on-the-ground resources are designed to support groups in staging these events.
